Our take

Flowerbomb Extreme 2013 opens with a sharp, almost metallic wisp of tea and bergamot that cuts through the fog of sweetness before you even know what hit you. Then the florals arrive, a dense thicket of orchid, jasmine sambac, osmanthus, freesia, orange blossom, and rose, all jostling for attention like guests at a garden party who forgot their manners. It settles into a sticky, vanillic base thickened with benzoin and patchouli, amber and musk locking everything into place. The overall character is plush and opulent, like a velvet chaise lounge that has absorbed decades of spilled perfume and fallen petals, then been dusted with cocoa powder. This is a sweet, powdery, balsamic oriental floral that feels distinctly mainstream in ambition but leans synthetic in execution, the way a luxury candle might promise realism and deliver presence instead. Longevity is decent, around six to eight hours depending on skin chemistry, but sillage stays polite, close enough to hug but not to shout. It thrives in the cold, autumn and winter are its true home, though it can manage a spring evening if you spray lightly. Wear this when you want to feel wrapped in a cashmere throw while standing in a marble lobby. Skip it if you dislike vanilla that reads as frosting or if you prefer florals that breathe instead of smother. One question remains: does a fragrance this heavy really need six florals in the heart, or is that just overkill disguised as generosity?
