Our take

Vetiver, doubled up as both Haitian vetiver and plain vetiver, is the backbone of Encre Noire A L'Extreme, dry and slightly smoky from very early on. Orris adds a small powdery softness to the vetiver's dry edge, the one moment in the composition that leans away from pure wood and smoke. Cypress and bergamot open briefly before incense and orris deepen the mix. Staying power here is long-lasting, and the sillage keeps pace with you rather than moving ahead of you.

Benzoin and patchouli settle into a dark, resinous base, while sandalwood softens the drier edges just enough to keep the composition wearable. That resinous base is dense enough that the smoky vetiver from the opening never really separates from it, the two blending into one continuous dry, dark impression.

Cold weather is where it belongs, fall and winter mostly, worn on days when a dry, smoky woodiness feels appropriate.

Incense in particular is what gives the whole thing its slightly ecclesiastical feel, dry smoke without ash, more temple than campfire. The elemi resin and incense from the early stages never fully disappear, giving the whole composition a thread of smoke that runs from start to finish.
