Amethyst

Amethyst opens with five different berries stacked on top of each other, black currant, blackberry, blueberry, mulberry and big strawberry, and the effect is less about any single fruit than about sheer density of jam-like sweetness. Five berries where most florals use one or two is an unusually generous choice, and it shows in how thick the opening feels. Peony, pepper and rose soften that density in the heart, with a touch of ylang-ylang adding a creamy floral note underneath the berries, and pepper in particular gives the whole accord a small, welcome bite it would otherwise lack.

Musk, woody notes and Bourbon vanilla settle into the base and calm the fruit down considerably, turning it soft rather than jammy by the finish. The woody notes especially pull the drydown drier than the berry opening ever suggested it would go. Longevity here fades at an even, unhurried pace, neither quick to go nor slow to let go, and the sillage stays within a small circle, which makes it a daytime fragrance built for personal enjoyment more than for making an impression on a room. Spring suits it best, when the berry basket feels most seasonal, though it holds up fine across every time of year.
