R.E.M. opens on an odd, appealing pairing: caramel and salt, sweet and mineral at once, with zefir giving the top a soft, marshmallow-like fluff that never quite turns sugary on its own. Fig and quince add a quiet fruit note underneath, more suggestion than statement, barely distinguishable from the caramel around them. The salt is the more unusual choice here, giving the sweetness a mineral edge that most caramel-based fragrances skip entirely.
Lavender and pear blossom move the middle away from pure gourmand character, aromatic and a touch green, before musk, tonka bean and sandalwood settle into a soft, powdery finish. Staying power is moderate, an average run that fades gently, and the scent stays close to skin throughout, private enough that you would need to lean in to catch the salt and caramel together. The powdery drydown stays soft and quiet, never growing louder than the sweet, salty opening. The salted caramel and warm musk feel most at home once the weather turns cold, an odd fit for the middle of summer. Most caramel fragrances go one-note fast, but the salt here keeps doing its work all the way through the drydown, long after the marshmallow fluff of the opening has faded.
