Our take

Iris and cacao together give Dior Homme 2005 its identity: a cold, powdery flower paired with something close to unsweetened chocolate, an unlikely combination that Olivier Polge somehow makes feel inevitable. Lavender, bergamot and sage open first, sharp and clean, but they're really just clearing the stage for the iris to arrive. Once it does, the powder takes over almost completely, a genuinely strange, cosmetic-leaning move for a men's fragrance at the time it launched.

Cardamom and amber add warmth to the heart alongside the cold iris, and by the base, leather and Tahitian vetiver take the whole thing somewhere darker and drier. Patchouli adds an earthy undertone beneath it all, while the powdery iris keeps surfacing through the leather right up to the end, never fully giving way to the wood.

It has real persistence, sticking around for a long stretch once it settles, though it holds its projection to a modest range close around the wearer. It plays best for someone who values ideas over comfort, cerebral and a little cold, and it can feel austere to anyone wanting real warmth from the first spray.
