Fève Délicieuse

François Demachy packed ten notes into the base of Fève Délicieuse alone: tonka bean, vanilla, cacao pod, caramel, praline, benzoin, milk, sandalwood, leather and cedar. Lavender, mint and bergamot open it first, cool and aromatic, a strange contrast to everything waiting underneath.

Sour cherry, freesia and jasmine carry the heart, and the cherry accord is the most distinct thing here, tart and a little sharp against the lavender still lingering from the top. It is a short bridge though, because the base is where the real character lives.

Tonka, vanilla, cacao pod, caramel and praline turn the drydown into something dense and nutty, with milk softening the whole thing into a rounder, creamier texture. Leather and cedar cut through underneath, dry and grounding, keeping the sweetness anchored to something less purely gourmand.

Sillage settles into a modest, warm bubble around the wearer, caught easily by whoever's seated nearby. Longevity holds firm too, easily outlasting the fresh, minty top notes it opened with by a wide margin. It wears best in the cold months of the year, when the caramel and cacao feel warm instead of heavy. Someone who finds gourmand fragrances too simple should find enough going on here between the cherry, leather and cacao to hold their attention.
