Bergamot opens So Elixir briefly before jasmine and rose take over, a warm, slightly spiced floral heart built by a trio of perfumers attached to a very accessible bottle. The florals here lean soft, honeyed and warm, with the resinous weight of an amber oriental already showing through, and the fragrance wastes little time getting there.
Patchouli, tonka bean and incense form a dense, balsamic base, and this is where So Elixir earns attention beyond its price point. The incense brings a genuinely smoky thread that most fragrances at this level skip, patchouli grounds the sweetness in something earthy, and tonka bean thickens everything into a warm, amber-toned drydown that holds firm on skin for a long stretch, well past the point where the citrus opening is a memory. Sillage stays modest, a warm little cloud that whoever sits near you will notice. Cold weather suits it best, when the amber-incense combination has real work to do, and the balsamic warmth works like a coat on its own, not an extra layer added for show. Considering what it costs next to the department-store names it borrows from, the base alone makes it worth a try, and the incense in particular is the kind of detail budget fragrances usually leave out entirely.
