Our take

Cardamom and mandarin orange open Voile d'Ambre on a bright, spiced citrus note that gives way early to myrrh and incense. Mandarin leaf and myrtle add a green, herbal edge underneath the citrus, cutting the sweetness before it can settle in, so the opening reads more spiced than sugary despite the name.

The heart is where the incense really takes hold, smoky and resinous, joined by opoponax for a deep, balsamic warmth that starts to push the composition toward something heavier and more serious.

Madagascar vanilla, Australian sandalwood and patchouli round out the base, sweet and woody at once, and the vanilla is generous enough to pull the whole composition toward gourmand territory by the drydown, though it never turns into straightforward dessert.

Wear time is long, sticking with you well after the citrus opening is gone. The warmth it gives off is modest and resinous, kept close, felt most by the wearer and by whoever gets near enough for a hug. Voile d'Ambre belongs to autumn and winter almost exclusively, its incense-and-vanilla warmth having little to do with anything lighter or warmer months might call for.
