Our take

Coal and soil tincture are the two notes that define Luna Rossa Carbon, an earthy, mineral smell that has almost nothing to do with typical fresh spicy openings. Pepper adds a dry, faintly sharp bite to the top, gone almost as quickly as it appears, leaving the mineral and metallic accord to take over the rest of the opening. Bergamot sits on top only briefly before the metallic, watery accord takes hold. The sillage stays a low, contained presence throughout, and it wears at a fair, middling clip once the initial burst fades.

Lavender is there in the heart but stays in the background, more texture than scent, while Ambroxan and patchouli hold the base together with a dry, woody warmth. Patchouli grounds the whole thing at the end, dry and a little dusty, which fits the mineral theme better than a sweeter, ambery base would have. Spring and summer suit it best, and the mineral, earthy character sets it apart from a typical fresh citrus scent. The soil tincture is what stays with you, an unusual, almost wet-stone quality running under the drier woody base.
