Our take

Picture a cigar box lined with cinnamon bark and a sliver of green apple tucked in for contrast: that's the opening of Red Tobacco, sharp and sweet at the same time. Oud, incense, and saffron thicken it fast, and by the time patchouli and jasmine show up in the heart, the fruit has all but disappeared into something darker and denser.

The base is where Pierre Montale's tobacco and vanilla take over completely, joined by amber, sandalwood, guaiac wood, and vetiver into something dark, sweet, and deeply woody. It's a big composition, built with a heavy hand rather than a light one, closer to a cold-weather coat than a light jacket.

Longevity is hard to shift once it's on skin, and the sillage announces itself, easily picked up by people nearby. The heaviest, darkest stretch of the year is where this one belongs, when cinnamon and oud read warm, not overwhelming, and the heavy sillage finally makes sense against the cold. Night suits it more than day by a wide margin, given how dense and spiced the whole thing gets.

The whole composition rewards people drawn to heavy, spiced tobacco far more than those who lean toward anything quiet or understated.
