Our take

Envy opens on a strange, very 1990s combination of bergamot, pineapple and magnolia, tart and faintly green before freesia and peach round the edges into something softer, though the tartness never fully disappears even once the florals take hold. Maurice Roucel holds the fruit against a genuinely green, slightly bitter backbone that runs through the whole composition, so it never turns candy-sweet.

Lily-of-the-valley, hyacinth and iris carry the heart, cool and a little powdery, and violet with rose add a touch of warmth alongside all that green. Jasmine threads through both the heart and the base, tying the two halves together instead of letting them read as separate fragrances. By the base, oakmoss, cedar and musk pull everything down into something earthier and drier, like a mossy garden right after rain.

Sillage stays modest, a small halo that mostly stays with the wearer, and it lingers on skin far longer than the crisp opening would lead you to expect. It's a fresh-weather fragrance, best worn in spring or summer, distinctive enough to stand apart from softer, safer florals, though it will read a little sharp and unusual to anyone expecting something conventionally pretty.
