Our take

Patchouli Paris opens with a shimmer of aldehydes that feels less like champagne and more like the cold static of a vintage television. That fizzy, metallic top note quickly gives way to iris, which here is not the cold, lipstick-y powder of classic Guerlain but a softer, almost cosmetic dustiness. The heart is a brief interlude before the base asserts itself. And what a base. This is patchouli stripped of its hippie leather and given a proper Parisian makeover. It is woody and earthy but smoothed by a vanilla that never turns gourmand, balanced by ambergris that adds a saline, skin-like warmth.

The overall character is that of a well-worn velvet opera cloak, slightly dusty, faintly sweet, clinging to the memory of a night out. It feels natural in its earthiness yet synthetic in its polished sheen, squarely in the niche-adjacent mainstream. The sillage is a whisper, a 2.73 that means you wear this for yourself. Longevity hovers around moderate, fading gracefully after four or five hours. This suits someone who wants a quiet, introspective patchouli, refined and melancholic. Skip it if you crave a beast mode projection or a bright, uplifting scent.

Wear it on a drizzly autumn afternoon or a cold winter evening, when you want to smell like the inside of a dusty bookshop that also sells expensive candles. It is a comfort scent, not a declaration.
