Our take

Cacao shows up early in L'Instant de Guerlain pour Homme, an odd, warm thread under a top of lemon, anise and grapefruit that would otherwise read as a straightforward citrus opener. Jasmine softens the citrus just slightly before cacao and patchouli take hold. It settles in and holds its shape for a long stretch, unhurried about fading, and it throws a modest, close-in presence, reaching whoever you're standing next to without traveling much past that. Tea and lavender run through the heart, cutting the cacao's sweetness with something drier, while sandalwood adds a soft woodiness underneath.

Natural musk, hibiscus seed and elemi resin round out the base, giving the drydown a soft, powdery finish. Anise repeats faintly through the whole wear, tying the opening to the base together.

Fall and winter are where this fragrance earns its keep, the cacao and warm spice reading as substantial against cold air in a way they wouldn't in summer heat. It moves easily between an office day and a dinner reservation, unusual for something built this far into gourmand territory.

Beatrice Piquet is credited as the nose behind it, and cacao is the reason it doesn't read as just another citrus opener. Cold weather is where it belongs, dense enough to stand up to a coat and scarf without disappearing underneath them.
