Our take

Anise gives L'Instant Magic an odd, licorice-tinged opening, sharpened further by bergamot and lemon before the composition shifts toward something much softer. Violet, mimosa, rose, freesia and carnation build a dense powdery-floral heart, the kind that smells like a compact of pressed face powder as much as any single flower. Almond and iris move in through the base alongside vanilla, white musk, sandalwood and cedar, turning the whole thing warm and sweet without ever sliding into anything gourmand.

Composed by Sylvaine Delacourte and Randa Hammami, it holds its shape well: the iris and almond drydown stays readable long after the anise has faded away, and the powdery violet keeps resurfacing in small waves right through to the end. Presence stays soft and near, picked up mainly on a coat or scarf, warm rather than sharp at that range.

Cold weather and winter air suit it especially well, when the powdery iris and warm base feel most at home. The anise opening is the boldest choice in the whole composition, unexpected and a little sharp against everything that follows, and it sets this apart from softer, more predictable florals in the same family.
