Our take

La Petite Robe Noire Eau de Parfum Collector Edition opens with a neon blast of sour cherry and red berries that feels almost synthetic in its candied insistence, a sparkly, slightly jarring top note that settles quickly into something softer. The almond and bergamot here are mere whispers; what really matters is the cherry, but it’s a cherry that has been dipped in black licorice and rolled in dusty patchouli. The heart reveals a rose that is less dewy flower than jammy residue, supported by a faint tea note that adds a welcome, airy bitterness. That fleeting lightness gives way to a base of tonka and vanilla that sits close to the skin, creamy and a little tired, like the memory of a chocolate bonbon left too long in a handbag.

This fragrance is a tulle tutu dipped in tar: girlish at first glance, but smudged with something dark and stubborn. The longevity is solid at around seven hours on my skin, though the sillage is disappointingly modest after the first hour, shrinking to a personal bubble. It feels sweet, heavy in a sticky way, and decidedly mainstream, though the anise and iris attempt a slight strangeness that never fully lands. It suits a woman who loves gourmands but wants a touch of noir glamour, and it works best on cold winter afternoons or crisp autumn evenings, when the cherry and vanilla can cling to a scarf without turning cloying. Skip it if you prefer fresh, green, or airy scents, because this one wears like a pair of velvet gloves that have been finger-painted with jam.
