Our take

Un Bois Sepia opens with a cypress so dry and dusty it feels like a memory of a forest floor in late October, the needles already brittle and browned. Vetiver and patchouli rise together in a raw, almost rooty tangle, while opoponax adds a faint resinous sweetness that never turns syrupy. It develops into a leathery woodiness, the sandalwood softening the edges just enough to keep this from being a brutal green stalk of a scent. The drydown is a tobacco-tinged amber, warm and slightly melancholic, like the last hour of daylight in a library full of old trunks and mothballs.

The overall character is a single vivid image: a sepia photograph of a man in a wool coat standing in a withered autumn garden, one hand in his pocket, the other holding a cup of black coffee that has gone cold. This is unabashedly niche, earthy and aromatic, with a texture that feels more natural than polished. It is not sweet; it is dry, leathery, and balsamic, with a subtle bitter edge from the vetiver and cypress.

The performance numbers are honest: longevity hovers around four to five hours on skin, sillage is intimate, a quiet presence rather than a declaration. It suits the man or woman who prefers dusk over dawn, who wants a scent that smells like a well-worn jacket rather than a sartorial flex. Skip it if you crave projection or crowd-pleasing sweetness. Wear this for a solo walk in a cold park, for a rainy afternoon spent reading, for fall's golden decay. It is too dry for summer and too introverted for a club. A fragrance for the private self, not the social one.
