Our take

Cuba Gold sounds tropical. It wears like the coldest stretch of the year, appearing almost only once the weather turns cold, when pink pepper and grapefruit open sharp and cold, not remotely beachy. Pink pepper gives the citrus a faint warmth right from the start, so the opening never feels purely cold. Lavender and vetiver settle into the heart, earthy and a little bitter, pulling the composition further from anything sweet or fruity despite the grapefruit up top.

Vanilla, amber and tonka bean take over in the base, turning the whole thing warm and a little boozy, closer to spiced rum poured over ice than to a fruit cocktail. The tonka bean in particular deepens the amber, giving the base a rounder, more resinous sweetness. Sillage forms a modest bubble, present for whoever sits close at the bar. Longevity holds at an easy, unhurried pace, comfortable rather than commanding.

Cuba Gold works best on a cold evening, worn somewhere warm indoors with a drink in hand, dry and a little bitter under all that vanilla and amber warmth. The lavender from the heart lingers longest, a cool herbal thread running underneath the sweetness even once everything else has settled.
