Our take

Folie Rouge opens with a surprising jolt of red thyme, all herbal bite and savoury green, before bergamot cuts in with a citrusy snap. It’s an arresting start, almost medicinal, that quickly softens into a powdery violet heart buoyed by the plush, starchy warmth of rice and a faint orange blossom sweetness. The drydown is where this fragrance lives: tonka bean and white musk blend into a cosy, slightly dusty vanilla veil, undercut by patchouli’s earthy edge. The overall effect is like a velvet cushion left too long in a sunlit attic – soft, warm, with a subtle mustiness that feels intimate rather than dated.

Delphine Jelk has built something that sits between niche curiosity and mainstream wearability. The thyme and rice combo gives it a savoury, almost lactonic twist that avoids typical gourmand territory, but the powdery violet and sweet musk anchor it firmly in feminine comfort zone territory. It feels slightly synthetic in the opening – that herbal bite doesn’t quite naturalise – but the heart and base are smooth, almost creamy. Performance is modest: longevity sits just above average (3.68) and sillage is polite (3.19), so you won’t fill a room, which suits its introspective character.

This is a fragrance for cool, grey autumn afternoons or quiet winter evenings when you want something present but not demanding. It works better at night than day, as the musk and tonka bloom in lower light. Who should wear it? Someone who enjoys unconventional florals with a savoury backbone and doesn’t need projection to feel dressed. Skip it if you crave loud, fruity sweetness or anything with obvious nuclear sillage. The rating (3.44) is fair: it’s interesting and pleasant but lacks the spark to be unforgettable. A cosy, eccentric companion, not a headline act.
