About white musk

White musk is a style of perfumery. Sources describe it as an accord of clean, soft synthetic musks, with powdery, cotton-like or skin-like facets where deer musk would bring animalic and leathery ones. Laundry comes to mind first, and one source says some compositions do give a laundry-clean effect while others read powdery, floral, creamy, woody or close to the skin.

The laundry link has a stated reason. Delacourte, a perfumer-brand blog, says polycyclic musks smell clean and cling well to fabrics, and that linear musks give a linen and cotton effect. That same article leaves the word "white" unexplained. Caperfume and a Substack essay on The Body Shop tie the term to that brand's 1981 product, which the essay says was framed from the start as a cruelty-free alternative to deer musk. Take that as one account of the name, since the sources do not settle it.

Caperfume lists galaxolide, habanolide and muscone among the molecules behind white musk. Galaxolide (HHCB) is a polycyclic musk with a clean, sweet, musky, floral and woody odour, and it was used from the late 1960s in some fabric softeners and detergents. Ethylene brassylate, a macrocyclic musk, is soft, sweet and powdery with ambrette and vanilla nuances, and it lasts a very long time on a blotter.

On the regulatory side, in 2002 European regulators concluded that HHCB could be used as a fragrance ingredient in cosmetic products without restriction. Synthetic musks are lipophilic and tend to deposit and persist in fat tissues, and the older nitro musk xylene is classed as very persistent and very bioaccumulative. Most musk fragrance used in perfumery today is synthetic.
