Our take

The dressing table is crowded with glass and silver, but the bottle of Formidable sits slightly forward of the others, catching the late afternoon sun. Someone has just applied it over a silk blouse, and the air in the room has shifted. The opening is a shock of cold fruit, blueberry and pear pressed together so the juice runs down a thumb. It smells exactly like leaning into an open refrigerator on a hot day, the kind of fruit sweetness that feels more like cold water than sugar. Then the flowers arrive, but they are not the polite, faded flowers of a hallway. The jasmine and orange blossom here are thick and heavy, and the iris cuts straight through them with a dry, cosmetic edge. It smells like expensive face powder and fresh cream, an odd and compelling combination that makes the room feel suddenly warmer.

The dry down is where the door to the rest of the house seems to close. The vanilla and praline are present, but they are not a dessert, they are the smell of a hand dipping into a jar of raw sugar. The patchouli and tonka bean anchor the sweetness, pulling it away from the skin and into the wood of the dressing table. It is a scent that fills the space between the mirror and the wall, turning the room into a place where a heavy velvet curtain has been pulled against the evening. It smells like a cashmere wrap that has been stored in a cedar chest with a bowl of candied violets, the wool absorbing the sugar until the two are indistinguishable.
