Our take

You are handed a glass of blackberry jam spiked with green apple and mandarin, and for a moment it feels like a teenager’s fantasy of grown-up glamour. That’s the opening of Imari Elixir 2015, a floral fruity that Avon commissioned from John Gamba and Rodrigo Flores-Roux. It hits sweet and tart, then lets a bouquet of rose, ylang-ylang, and jasmine take over, powdery and yellow, before sinking into a vanilla-red amber base with patchouli’s dusty root. The overall character is a velvet evening bag that has spent one too many nights in a cluttered drawer, plush but slightly tired. It feels syrupy and definitely synthetic, not in a cheap way but in that distinctly Avon way that manages to be both ambitious and affordable. The longevity barely cracks three hours, and sillage hovers close to the skin after the first blast, which is a real shame for something this bold. It suits someone who wants a lush, autumn-winter hug without spending a lot, but skip it if you crave airy freshness or expect to be noticed across a room. Best worn for a dinner date when the air is crisp, or bundled into a scarf in November. Could it work in spring? Only if you lean into the powder and let the green apple fight the chill. One specific image: it’s like a silk scarf left on a radiators, warm and slightly fruited, fading fast.
