Cumin decides whether Rose 31 works for you, a sweaty, spiced edge laid over rose petals at the start. Le Labo built the fragrance to unsettle the flower rather than flatter it, and the first stretch can smell more like a spice cabinet than a bouquet. Give it time and the rose settles into something warmer. Staying power settles into a comfortable middle stretch, the cumin-rose combination easy to live with and the sillage stays modest, a small halo that whoever stands close to you will pick up on.
Vetiver and cedar move in through the heart, drying the rose out and giving it a woody backbone, not the soft, powdery lift most rose fragrances reach for. The effect is a rose grown wild in a forest, green stem and bark mixed in alongside the petal. Cumin never fully disappears, staying as a low warmth under the wood.
Guaiac wood, oud and labdanum take over in the base, and the drydown is where the fragrance earns its reputation, turning dark and resinous, the oud adding a leathery thread the top notes never hinted at. Cooler air suits the woody-rose combination best, when the resinous depth has room to show without summer heat competing. Wear it when you want a rose that argues back, not one that simply smells nice.
