Character
Under the sandalwood that gives Santal 33 its name, there's a thread of leather running the whole way through, dry and a little sharp, never sweet. Cardamom and papyrus add a powdery, spiced edge early on, while violet and iris soften the leather just enough to keep it wearable, not austere.
Frank Voelkl built something linear, not layered; sandalwood and leather are present from spray to drydown, with amber warming things slightly at the very end. It outlives its own top notes by a wide margin, and the sillage sits as a quiet halo around the body, felt more than seen.
Daytime wear suits it a little more than night, though the difference is small given how consistent the composition stays throughout rather than shifting dramatically. Fall lets the leather and cedar feel most at home, though spring and summer wear it just fine too, dry wood carried more by skin chemistry than by any single note fighting for attention.
