Our take

Serpentine opens with a startlingly literal snap of fresh grass and hot asphalt, as if you’ve just stepped off a city sidewalk onto a freshly mown lawn that gives onto a parking lot. The aldehydes fizz like fizzy green smoke, while galbanum and iris leaf keep everything sharp, almost surgical. That’s the trick, the grass isn’t dewy and pastoral, it’s the kind you find growing through cracks in pavement, urban and tenacious. As it dries, juniper and nutmeg add a dusty, aromatic warmth, and the labdanum and benzoin smooth things into a faintly resinous whisper against cedar and guaiac wood. The overall character is a greenhouse in a bus station, all tempered glass and engine heat.

This is a synthetic natural, a fragrance that feels engineered to unsettle as much as please. The longevity is a brief 2.6 hours, the sillage a close whisper, so you’ll have to reapply or lean in to smell it on yourself. That suits the introspective, the person who wants a momentary green shock rather than a daylong statement. Wear it on a warm spring afternoon when the first thunderclouds roll in, or on a humid summer evening when the asphalt is still warm. Skip it if you want comfort, projection, or anything sweet. Serpentine is a sprig of mint dropped on a hot engine block, intriguing, fleeting, and not for everyone.
