Our take

Condé Parfum’s Vanille Bourbon opens with a generous pour of dark rum and boozy plum, the kind of sticky-sweet fruit that’s been soaking in liquor overnight. The booze is immediate, heady, almost medicinal at first. But give it ten minutes and the heart unfurls: amber and benzoin melt the sharp edges into a warm, incense-laced glow, with floral notes hovering like ghost petals in the steam. The drydown is all about the vanilla. Not a fluffy, confectionary vanilla, but a resinous, almost black one, married to tonka and sandalwood. Ambretone adds a subtle animalic hum that prevents the whole thing from collapsing into dessert territory.

This fragrance feels like a leather armchair pulled too close to a fireplace, a half-empty snifter sweating on the side table. It’s heavy, sweet in a humid way, and thoroughly natural despite the synthetic backbone. The longevity is excellent, easily eight hours, but the sillage is restrained, polite. You won’t announce yourself from across the room, but the person leaning in for a hug will catch the boozy, balsamic warmth. It suits anyone who craves depth without shoutiness, a winter night scent for reading or quiet seduction. Skip it if you want airy freshness or a daytime spritz, but for a snowy evening, this is a fur-lined trap.
