Our take

World Cup opens with a sharp synthetic edge that sits on the skin before the spices arrive. The cinnamon and cardamom feel dry and powdered rather than fresh, and the bergamot does little to lift that dusty impression. Composed by Dominique Ropion, the fragrance leans heavily on its amber and labdanum base, which creates a thick resinous weight. The rose and jasmine in the heart are present but they stay buried under the heavier materials. Vanilla adds a flat sweetness that does not round out the sharper notes as well as it could. The overall impression is dense and a bit unrefined, with the individual elements competing instead of blending into a smooth whole.

This density makes it a scent suited for dimly lit evening gatherings where the warm spicy and balsamic accords can sit in the air without overwhelming a bright setting. The woody undertones give it a grounded feel, but the synthetic sharpness in the opening remains noticeable throughout. It is a fragrance that demands a specific tolerance for that artificial edge. Those who prefer a natural smelling rose or a clean citrus opening will find the composition difficult to wear. The powdered spice and heavy amber simply do not soften enough to appeal to someone seeking a smooth or elegant floral wood.
