Our take

Bergamot, mandarin and elemi open Sauvage Parfum with the citrus-and-resin snap the line is known for, bright but not sharp, before sandalwood takes over the heart almost entirely. That sandalwood is the whole story here, creamy and dry at once, and by the base olibanum, tonka bean and vanilla turn it into something closer to warm skin than cologne. François Demachy built this version denser and sweeter than earlier entries in the line, leaning on vanilla where the others leaned on ambroxan, and the shift changes the fragrance's whole temperature.

The sandalwood base is steady and durable, in no hurry to fade, and sillage stays gentle, a warm cloud that holds near the wearer without pushing outward. Fall and winter are its strongest seasons by a wide margin, though spring numbers hold up reasonably well, and the day and night figures both run high, suggesting a fragrance equally at home behind a desk or out after dark.

The vanilla brings real sweetness to what is otherwise a fairly dry, woody composition, and the balance between the two lands closer to warmed sandalwood shavings than dessert. Elemi keeps a resinous, slightly green edge alive at the top, giving the warm base something sharper to play against, and it never fully disappears even once the vanilla settles in.
