Our take

Blackberry and orange open bright and a little tart against olibanum and labdanum, resinous and warm from the first minute. Coriander and tarragon add a green, peppery lift, and honey slides in early, thick and slightly waxy, a resinous sweetness rather than a sugary one. Bertrand Duchaufour composed this in 2007, layering enough spice and resin into the opening that it barely reads as a typical fruity top.

The heart is where it gets busy: cinnamon, clove, and bay leaf turn the honey spicy and a touch medicinal, rose and orchid add a floral note without much softness, and celery seeds give the whole thing an odd, savory edge that sets it apart from a straightforward gourmand. Agarwood, myrrh, and patchouli settle in underneath, dense and resinous, staying put long after the fruit and honey have quieted down, with immortelle and oakmoss adding a dry, almost leathery finish. The sillage stays close-range, honey and amber warming the air right around the wearer. Cold weather is its natural habitat, worn after dark more than under midday sun, and the dense, spicy structure fits nights out more than casual daytime wear. Complexity is the whole point, note after note doing something slightly different.
