Our take

Afrika Olifant opens with a warm, resinous slap of myrrh and labdanum, ambergris adding a salty, almost fermented sweetness that feels ancient and unapologetic. The heart is where this fragrance really bares its teeth: civet and castoreum lend a barnyard funk, leather wraps it in saddle-worn hide, and the oud stays smoky and medicinal rather than sweet. The drydown settles into synthetic civet and musk, which smooths the edges but never fully tames the beast. This is a perfume that smells like the forgotten corner of a natural history museum where taxidermy meets melted candle wax. It is heavy, dense, and decidedly not for the faint of heart. The longevity is excellent, easily lasting eight hours, and the sillage stays close to the skin after the first hour, which is merciful given the intensity. Best worn in fall or winter, and exclusively at night. This suits someone who enjoys animalics, leather, and uncompromising vintage-style compositions. Skip it if you prefer clean laundry scents or anything airy. The one weakness is a slightly waxy, synthetic edge in the base that undermines the otherwise raw naturalism. Would you wear this to the opera or a leather bar? Either way, you are making a statement. 🐘
