Our take

There is no mistaking the opening of Bouquet de Mai for anything but a Guerlain. The grapefruit and pink pepper arrive with a snap that feels almost metallic at first, like a pair of garden shears cutting through stems. That sharpness settles quickly into a white floral bouquet that is less about individual blossoms and more about the collective weight of petals pressed together in the heat. The grass note keeps things from tipping into prim territory, adding a green, almost damp undertone that suggests the morning after a spring rain. Thierry Wasser has crafted something that smells natural in the way a real garden smells, not photorealistic but recognizably alive, with a faint animalic hum beneath the clean surface. It is a spring dress that has been worn once too often, the hem still carrying a trace of fresh sweat.

The performance is where the fantasy falters. Longevity barely reaches three hours before the florals retreat into a soft, leafy ghost, and sillage hovers close to the skin after the first thirty minutes. This is not a fragrance that announces itself. It unfolds quietly, then fades, which makes it difficult to justify its price point when so many other Guerlain offerings last longer and project further. It suits someone who wants to smell pretty without trying, who values intimacy over impact, and who prefers to reapply at lunch. Skip it if you need a single spritz to carry you through a workday. Wear it for a Sunday brunch under a wisteria trellis, or for a slow afternoon at the farmer’s market in late May, when the air already smells faintly of cut grass and peonies. It is a sketch, not a portrait, and lovely only if you do not mind it dissolving before you reach the last course.
