Our take

L'Interdit Edition Couture 2020 opens with a pear so ripe it’s almost bruised, its juice sweetened by bergamot’s citrusy wink. That fruitiness is a decoy. Within minutes, the tuberose pushes through like a white-gloved hand parting velvet curtains, backed by orange blossom’s honeyed punch and jasmine’s indolic slink. The drydown is where Givenchy’s trio of perfumers flex their muscle: patchouli turns the earth dark, ambroxan adds a sleek synthetic shimmer, and vanilla sweetens the dirt without sanitising it. Vetiver keeps the whole thing grounded, roots dusted with soil. The overall character is a couture gown dragged through a garden after midnight – elegant but stained green at the hem.

This is a floral chypre that leans noticeably sweet and woody, with a density that feels more mainstream than niche but refuses to apologise for its polish. The numbers tell an honest story: longevity is decent but not spectacular, and sillage is polite rather than room-filling. It thrives in cool weather, autumn and winter, when its weight clings to scarves and wool. Wear it to a dinner where you want to smell expensive but not loud, or on a date where the first impression is a little dangerous, a little sweet.

Best suited for someone who loves tuberose but wants it roughed up by patchouli, who enjoys a touch of fruit without committing to a gourmand. Skip it if you demand projection that announces itself from across the room, or if white florals tend to turn screechy on your skin. Is it a masterpiece? No. But it is a very good dress that knows exactly when to whisper.
