Our take

Homme Cologne 2013 runs on almost nothing: Calabrian bergamot, grapefruit blossom and musk, three notes doing the whole job. The bergamot dominates early, sharp and slightly bitter, the way a good cologne always leans citrus first, and the grapefruit blossom adds a soft, white-floral hum that rounds out the citrus without adding any real sweetness of its own. By the base, musk is really all that remains, and there is very little change between the first minute and the last trace on skin. It clings mainly to the wearer's own skin, a hushed finish that most people around you won't register at all. Longevity runs about average, holding through a normal stretch before it fades into something faint and soft. It reflects François Demachy's clean citrus house style, spare and unfussy, without claiming to be anything more than that.

Warm weather is where it works best, worn generously since it never overstays its welcome. The idea of citrus cologne stripped to almost nothing is the whole appeal, not a compromise, and it rewards restraint over the heavier orientals many people reach for instead.
