Our take

Alheba by Cave opens with a smoky, resinous fist of elemi and labdanum, incense licking the air like the last embers of a church that burned down yesterday. The lavender arrives not as a fresh lavender field but as a dried sprig, crushed into cashmere wood and white musk, turning the smoke into something woolen and warm. As it dries, patchouli and oakmoss root the whole affair into damp earth, while ambergris adds a saline shimmer that prevents it from suffocating. The overall image is a hermit’s cloak hung in a stone chapel after a rainstorm: heavy, quiet, a little holy. This is not a bright or sweet fragrance. It is balsamic, earthy, and distinctly niche in its refusal to please quickly. The longevity is admirable at 4.05, but the sillage, while present at 3.91, hovers closer to the skin than you might expect from such bold notes. Who should wear it? Someone who finds comfort in solitude, who wants to smell like they’ve been tending a fire in a forest at midnight. Who should skip it? Anyone allergic to gloom or seeking a springtime floral. Wear it in fall or winter evenings, preferably when the temperature drops and you want the scent to cling like memory. The only flaw: it can feel a bit one-note after four hours, the lavender retreating too early, leaving the woody-musk base to drone without much lift. Still, for a fragrance that costs so little in attention, it gives plenty of atmosphere.
