Autour de Minuit opens with a sharp, glittering slap of pink pepper and mandarin, the citrus more pith than juice, before the heart drags you into a darker room. Raspberry goes jammy against incense and saffron, with rose hovering like a silk scarf left in a smoky lounge. The drydown is where this oriental finds its footing: a fuzzy blend of vanilla and sandalwood, with patchouli and oud adding a worn leather edge, though the wood is polite rather than pungent.
The overall effect feels like a velvet armchair that has absorbed decades of parties, slightly stained but still elegant. It is sweet but not cloying, powdery in the way old lipstick is powdery, and distinctly synthetic in its fruit note, which keeps it from feeling fully natural. That synthetic raspberry is a double edged sword, it gives character but also dates the composition to around its 2015 launch.
Given the middling longevity and sillage, this is a scent for those who want to feel enveloped rather than announced. Wear it on a cool autumn evening when you plan to stay put, perhaps over dinner or a film, as it does not project enough for a dance floor or a crowd.
