Cuba Winner opens with a fistful of watery notes that slap you with the smell of a freshly hosed down locker room floor, lavender and bergamot trying to lend some dignity to the proceedings. The heart reveals bay leaf and jasmine, an odd couple that never quite learns to dance together; the jasmine goes limp while the bay leaf tries to pick up the tempo. The dry down is a wan amber over sandalwood and patchouli, all three played so softly they might as well be whispering from another room. This is a fragrance built for maximum transparency, a pale blue swimming pool at six in the morning, clean and empty and already evaporating.
It feels aggressively synthetic and resolutely mainstream, the kind of scent that makes no pretense of depth or artistry. The longevity clocks in at a weak 2.70 and the sillage barely registers at 2.27, which means you are buying this for yourself alone. That three point eight seven rating? Generous, I suspect, from people who appreciate that it smells inoffensive and costs almost nothing.
This is for a guy who wants to smell vaguely fresh for a few hours without offending anyone at the office or on a quick summer date. Skip it if you crave presence or complexity, or if you actually want to be noticed. Wear it on a hot weekday morning when the air conditioning is broken and you just need something not to make things worse. Just do not expect it to last through lunch.
