Our take

Basil is an odd companion for rose, but Eaudemoiselle de Givenchy leans on it anyway, pairing it with Amalfi lemon and tangerine for a citrus opening that reads green and a little peppery before rose has a chance to speak. Once ylang-ylang and tincture of rose take over, the green edge softens into something floral but still fresh, never heavy or overly sweet, the rose kept slightly abstract, never quite lush. Musk, ambrette and tonka bean close it out gently, giving the base a soft, slightly powdery warmth that never fully takes over from the florals above it.

Staying power is average, noticeable through wear and thinning gradually as it goes. Sillage forms a small halo, mostly reaching whoever is standing near enough to lean in.

Spring is clearly its best season, the citrus-basil opening suited to bright mornings, with summer and fall holding up reasonably and winter fading into the background.

This stays easy and unfussy throughout, a rose built light rather than syrupy, worn well by anyone who wants florals without the weight, basil doing more work here than most people expect from a rose fragrance.
