Our take

Jalila by Placebo opens with a peach note that leans too heavily into candy. It sits thick and syrupy against the cold air of a stone courtyard at night, where a small fire burns in a metal bowl. The fruit is immediate and loud, almost cloying, before the frankincense arrives to cut the sugar. Gray smoke curls upward and mingles with the steam rising from the peach, creating a contrast that feels abrupt rather than smooth.

The heart settles into a dense resinous blend. Myrrh and labdanum provide a deep, sticky warmth that clings to the heavy coat worn against the chill. Honey drips through the center of the scent, sweetening the tonka bean until the air smells of a rich, dark confection. Suede enters from the base, adding a soft leather texture that brushes against the resins. The patchouli here is earthy and rooted, while the Peru balsam adds a final touch of smooth, sweet sap to the chilly evening.

The entire scene smells of opulence and heat, yet that initial peach remains a distraction. It never quite integrates with the serious resins and the leather surrounding it. The fruit sits on top of the smoke like a bright sticker on a velvet curtain, refusing to blend into the deep shadows of the courtyard. It is a beautiful, heavy atmosphere that is ultimately held back by its own sugary opening.
