Our take

Malbec Black opens like a dark pantry door swinging open in late autumn, releasing a cloud of cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger dusted with lemon zest and juniper berries. The citrus flickers out quickly, leaving a warm, almost sticky spice that feels freshly ground and slightly resinous. Sage and geranium cut through briefly like a dry herbal whisper, but the heart surrenders fast to the base: a sweet, powdery vanilla tangled with ambroxan-like cashmeran, benzoin’s balsamic glow, and a clean patchouli that refuses to get dirty. Pascal Gaurin built this as a synthetic amber-woody bomb that smells more like a mainstream nightclub than a niche apothecary, but it executes its mission with polish.

The overall character is a plush, dark velvet throw tossed over a leather armchair in a candlelit lounge, warm and slightly cloying if oversprayed. It lands firmly on the sweet, heavy side, and the sillage sits politely at moderate – you’ll get noticed, not announced. Longevity holds strong for seven or eight hours, which is fair for the price.

This suits the guy who wants to smell like a spiced vanilla latte crossed with a cedar humidor on a December night. Skip it if you crave fresh greens or transparent aquatics, or if you live somewhere that sees sun more than frost. Wear it to a winter wedding, a cocktail bar at eleven PM, or anytime you want to feel like you’re wrapped in a cashmere scarf that’s been stored with cinnamon sticks. Just don’t spray it before noon.
