Misfit by Arquiste opens with a lavender that is not the standard lavender of barbershops. It is aromatic and green, quickly tangled with the herbal, almost dusty bite of angelica and the faintly earthy, petrichor-like shimmer of carrot seeds. The Calabrian bergamot here is a fleeting citrus ghost, there to brighten the top before the composition sinks into its real landscape. That landscape is a forest floor in late autumn, where the cool soil meets the warmth of decaying leaves and resin. In the heart, Akigalawood introduces a clean, peppery woodiness that reads almost like synthetic oud, while ambrette lends a muffled, fuzzy musk. The Bulgarian rose is present but not dewy or romantic, it has been dried and powdered, folded into the balsamic styrax. The base is where Misfit finally settles into a coat of patchouli and labdanum, sweetened with tonka and tolu balsam, so the drydown feels like worn leather bound in warm amber.
This is not a loud perfume in fact its soft sillage (under three) and moderate longevity (three and a half) make it a skin scent that rewards close encounters. It feels natural in its materia but niche in its refusal to be pretty or clean; there is an earthy, slightly sweaty undertone that keeps it from being comfortable. It suits someone who wears complexity but doesn’t announce it, and anyone expecting a bright floral or a dense gourmand should skip. Wear it in fall or winter, especially for evening occasions where you want to be present without projection. If this fragrance had a shape it would be a shaggy dog nosing through bracken after rain.
