The courtyard is quiet, the kind of stillness that lets every detail settle. A small brazier burns nearby, its thin smoke curling upward and mingling with the damp earth beneath the sycamore trees. Someone has just set a cup of dark coffee on a wooden bench, and the steam carries a sharp edge of pepper through the cool air. The opening feels immediate and grounded, with cypriol adding a dry, mineral sharpness that keeps the smoke from feeling heavy. It is a space defined by texture rather than brightness, where the first impression is one of standing very still among old trees and cooling embers.
As the moment stretches, the smoke softens and the scene shifts toward the wood itself. Oak and cypress rise from the bench and the surrounding trunks, their dry, resinous presence wrapping around the earlier coffee like a second skin. Osmanthus appears in small gestures, a soft floral note that does not float above the composition but rests quietly within the grain of the wood. It is a gentle contrast, offering a faint sweetness that feels natural to the setting rather than added to it. The heart of Sycamore Fragment 梧桐细 is less about transition and more about deepening, as if the air itself is becoming denser with every breath taken in this courtyard.
The ground beneath the bench holds the memory of rain, and the base notes bring that earthiness forward.
