Our take

Lanvin’s Vetyver from 2003 opens with a brisk citrus snap, lime and lemon zipping alongside a gin-like juniper that feels more cocktail shaker than forest floor. That sharpness fades quickly into a middle where caraway and nutmeg brace the composition with a dusty, almost savory warmth, while bitter orange and jasmine hover like a slightly wilted corsage. The base is where the namesake note finally shows up, but it’s a polite, milled vetiver, smoothed over by sandalwood and cedar into a faintly powdery skin scent. The whole thing is a well-pressed khaki shirt: perfectly acceptable, nothing exciting, and it wrinkles if you look at it sideways.

The performance numbers tell the real story. Longevity barely scrapes two and a half stars, sillage not much better, which means this fragrance evaporates before you finish your morning coffee. It’s clean, lightly earthy, and wears a synthetic sheen that stops just short of claiming any real natural depth. Who should wear this? Someone who wants a vetiver without the rooty muddiness, a safe office scent for spring or summer days when the air conditioning is set too high. Who should skip it? Anyone expecting the rough, smoky vetiver of a Guerlain or a Sycomore. This is a polite handshake, not a conversation. Wear it to a midday brunch or a Tuesday meeting, and reapply after lunch. The only question is whether you’ll remember to.
