Our take

Licorice and almond open Hypnotic Poison Eau de Parfum on a strange, slightly medicinal note before the sweetness catches up, more anise candy than flower shop in the first minutes. It's an unusual entry for a fragrance this associated with vanilla, sharp and a little bitter before anything soft arrives. Nutty and balsamic undertones show up almost immediately too, giving the licorice some warmth instead of leaving it purely sharp.

Jasmine sambac and orange blossom fill out the heart with white floral warmth, though they never fully soften the licorice's edge, which keeps resurfacing under the florals as the fragrance develops.

Vanilla and tonka bean take over at the base, thick, dark and a little resinous, built around the deep, slightly boozy sweetness of a whole vanilla pod. There's a balsamic thickness to the drydown as well, giving the vanilla a resin-like, less straightforwardly sweet depth.

Hold on skin runs long, easily outlasting the licorice-almond opening once the base settles in. Projection announces itself clearly, especially in cold weather, matching a season pattern that leans hard toward fall and winter, and the licorice edge never fully disappears into the vanilla, even once the base has fully taken over.
