Our take

Stella Cadente opens with a bright, almost peppery burst of Guatemalan cardamom and galbanum, a green snap that quickly softens into a violet-tinged citrus haze. The heart is where this fragrance turns into a roaring hearth: cinnamon and cloves wrapped in Canadian pine, with bay leaf and ylang-ylang adding a slightly sweaty, floral warmth. It feels like stepping into a candlelit lodge after a rainstorm in the woods, your coat soaked in resin and bark and the faint breath of someone wearing jasmine. The dry down is a dense, balsamic amber, labdanum and Peru balsam melting into a vanilla-patchouli comfort that is rich but not cloying. Mark Buxton has crafted something that feels natural in its complexity yet decisively niche in its refusal to be polite.

The overall character is a winter bonfire that has been doused with floral water, then rebuilt into something both sacred and slightly barbaric. It is sweet, but the sweetness comes from spices and balsams rather than sugar. Longevity is moderate, about four to five hours, and sillage is a gentle cloak rather than a shout, which suits its introspective warmth. Who should wear it? The person who wants to smell like they walked out of a foggy forest on a December evening, not like they raided a dessert shop. Skip it if you dislike cinnamon as a dominant note or need projection to fill a room. Wear it to a dinner party in late autumn, or alone by a fire with a book. Could this scent actually improve the flavor of mulled wine? I suspect it might.
