Habit Rouge Eau de Toilette

Habit Rouge opens on a wave of lemon, tangerine and bergamot, sharpened with a snap of basil, more citrus grove than a spray from behind a counter. Guerlain built the frame around a barbershop idea from the start, citrus laid straight over leather and amber, and it still reads that way: formal, a touch severe, unmistakably French.

Rose and carnation take over the middle without turning the whole thing sweet, and cinnamon threads through with a spiced warmth that gives the heart real lift. Underneath, vanilla and benzoin push against the leather and oakmoss, and that pairing is where Habit Rouge earns its keep: the amber and leather anchor the base and keep working long after the citrus has burned off, holding their shape rather than fading into powder.

Composed by Jean-Paul Guerlain, it gives off a warm glow that reaches whoever stands near you, built on patchouli and jasmine that soften the leather without erasing its edge.

It leans toward the cooler months, spring through winter, and struggles once real heat sets in, where the amber and leather turn heavy fast. Wear it to the office, to dinner, anywhere a little formality is welcome. Anyone who wants citrus with some backbone will find plenty here, and anyone hoping for something transparent and modern should look at a newer bottle.
