Twelve signs, sixty bottles, and what the votes actually say
We gave every sign a scent family and pulled the five most-voted fragrances out of each one. The pairing is ours. The numbers under it are not.
Nobody has ever shown that the month you were born in changes what you want to smell like, and this page is not about to be the first. What a sign does give you is a mood everybody already agrees on, and that turns out to be a usable way into a catalogue of a hundred thousand bottles.
So each sign gets one scent family, picked by us. No two signs share an accord, so no bottle appears twice. Everything after that comes out of the catalogue rather than out of a horoscope: the five most-voted fragrances per sign, one per house, and what wearers themselves voted about season and time of day.
Aries gets the first thirty seconds
Aries · 21 March – 19 April · pepper, ginger and everything that opens loud
Pink pepper, ginger, cardamom. The fresh-spicy accord is the opening act of perfumery, the part that hits in the first half-minute and settles what everyone in the lift thinks of you before the heart of the fragrance has said a word. Bergamot sits under half of these to keep the pepper from reading like somebody's kitchen.
Which is a fair description of the first sign of the zodiac. Aries is fire, ruled by Mars, and gets handed every quality that comes with going first: impatience, nerve, a habit of starting things and leaving the finishing to someone else. Blunt rather than cruel, in the charts. The friend who tells you the haircut is wrong before you have taken your coat off.
418 bottles clear our vote floor here. They score 86 for daytime against 55 for night, so this is a family that belongs to the working day. Six in ten are sold to men, which the top of the list immediately argues with: Sauvage leads, and the two most-voted behind it are both women's.
Taurus is the shelf people buy twice
Taurus · 20 April – 20 May · vanilla, caramel, milk and everything soft
Vanilla turns up in 73% of this group. That is the strongest single pairing anywhere in this guide, and it tells you most of what you need to know: gourmand perfumery is not trying to be difficult and never has been. Tonka, musk and sandalwood follow the vanilla around.
Taurus is the earth sign that stays put, ruled by Venus, and astrology hands it the physical senses outright. Good food, good fabric, the same restaurant every time because it was right the first time. The stubbornness it gets teased for is mostly a refusal to be hurried into something worse.
It is the newest set of the twelve. Half of these came out after 2017, against 2008 for Capricorn, because warm and sweet is what the industry has been making lately. 61% is sold to women, and Black Opium sits on top with 32 244 votes.
Gemini has the biggest shelf and the shortest attention span
Gemini · 21 May – 20 June · citrus and air
The twins are not a warning about lying. Gemini is air, ruled by Mercury, and the two faces are about holding two positions with equal conviction, which the sign does happily and often in the same conversation. Quick, curious, bored first.
Citrus is the only family that behaves that way. Bergamot, lemon, neroli, mandarin: bright, immediate, gone inside the hour. Everywhere else that would be a flaw. Half of this group carries bergamot, you put one on without deciding anything, and it has changed its mind before you get home.
830 bottles clear the floor, more than any other sign here, and they take 93 out of 100 for daytime. The cost of that sits in the same row at 36 for winter, second-lowest of the twelve. Light Blue leads on 34 277 votes, the most-voted fragrance in the whole guide.
Cancer smells like something you already own
Cancer · 21 June – 22 July · powder, musk, clean skin
Powder and musk are the notes that do memory. Soap, clean laundry, the inside of a handbag you have not opened since school. They work close to the skin instead of across a room, and none of it announces anything.
That is the sign almost exactly. Cancer is water, ruled by the Moon, protective of a small circle and slow to let anyone new inside it. Horoscope columns will tell you it lives in the past; the kinder version is that it is moved more by a smell from twenty years ago than by anything happening this week.
Musk is in 61% of the group, vanilla in 40%. The voting puts it dead centre on every axis we have: 61 winter, 51 summer, 56 night, 87 day. Of the twelve shelves this is the only one with no opinion about when it should be worn. Lolita Lempicka has led it since 1997.
Leo takes the winter and the evening
Leo · 23 July – 22 August · amber and warm spice
One sign is ruled by the Sun and it is this one. Warmth comes first in every description of Leo and pride comes second: generous, loyal, theatrical, happiest when the room is looking and audibly unhappy when it is not. The performance is real. So is the affection under it, which is why this is the sign that overpays for everyone's dinner.
Amber and warm spice are the loudest materials in perfumery that people still enjoy standing next to. Cinnamon, benzoin, labdanum, resin, with patchouli under 42% of them holding the whole thing down. If a fragrance has ever walked into a room ahead of you, it came off this shelf.
84 for winter and 79 for night, level with Scorpio at the top of both. It is also the most genuinely unisex group on the page: 302 of the 756 are sold to nobody in particular, more than the men's or the women's count alone. Big warm fragrances gave up on gender well before the rest of the shelf did.
Virgo is the shelf that smells like being clean
Virgo · 23 August – 22 September · green and herbal
Fig leaf, cut stems, tomato leaf, tea, crushed grass. Green is the least sweet corner of this catalogue and the least forgiving: there is nowhere to hide in a green fragrance, and a sloppy one is obvious in seconds.
Virgo is earth, mutable, ruled by Mercury like Gemini but pointed at work instead of talk. The sign notices the detail nobody else did, fixes it unasked, then worries about it anyway. Its reputation for fussiness is really a reputation for having standards in writing.
251 bottles, 93 for daytime, 30 for winter. Only Aquarius is more allergic to cold weather. Half of these came out before 2011, earlier than everything except Capricorn, because green has been quietly out of fashion for a decade. The survivors are rated as well as they are for that exact reason.
Libra owns the most one-sided shelf we have
Libra · 23 September – 22 October · rose and white flowers
570 of these 693 bottles are sold to women. At 82% that is the most lopsided figure on this page, and the exact mirror of Scorpio at the other end. Whatever perfumery believes flowers are for, it believes it very firmly.
Libra is the second Venus sign. Taurus took the senses, this one took the eye: balance, charm, an allergy to ugliness in any form, and the indecision that comes free with seeing both sides of everything. The scales need two pans or they are just a stick, so partnership runs through every reading of it.
Jasmine is in 47% of the group, musk in 43%, rose in 36%. Done badly this is soap. Done well it is the most complicated thing on any shelf, because a rose in a bottle is thirty materials pretending to be one flower. The scores themselves are unremarkable: 50 winter, 57 summer, 88 day. Flowers go anywhere. Only the marketing has made its mind up.
Scorpio wears the darkest shelf in the catalogue
Scorpio · 23 October – 21 November · oud, leather, smoke, animalics
The sign astrology trusts least and respects most. Scorpio is water, fixed, ruled by Mars and latterly Pluto, and it is private rather than secretive. The difference matters: it will know everything about you and volunteer nothing back. All-or-nothing follows it everywhere, so the sign is either entirely in or permanently gone.
It gets the materials perfumery uses when it wants to be uncomfortable. Oud is medicinal and animal at once. Leather is skin and smoke. The animalic notes are civet and castoreum, which smell like something died when you meet them alone and like a person once they are in a formula. Leather is in 57% of this group and none of it is trying to be liked.
210 bottles, the smallest group of the twelve and the most severe, level with Leo for winter at 84 and taking night outright at 80.
Fifteen of the 210 are marketed to women. Seven per cent. Wearers ignore that completely: 112 of them, more than half, are sold as unisex.
Sagittarius is where the men's aisle actually lives
Sagittarius · 22 November – 21 December · herbs, lavender, tobacco
377 of these 642 are men's and 63 are women's. That is the second-widest gap on the page after Libra's, running the other way, and it is not an accident: the aromatic accord has been the default masculine language since the eighties.
Lavender, sage, rosemary, and tobacco for the part of the evening after the walk. Vetiver sits under 39% of them, dry and rooty and slightly bitter. These are open-air fragrances rather than room fragrances.
Which suits the sign. Sagittarius is fire, mutable, ruled by Jupiter, the planet of more, and everything written about it involves distance: travel, foreign languages, the argument at two in the morning about what any of it means. The honesty is famously unfiltered and regularly counts as rudeness.
On season and time it lands almost exactly where Aries does, 51 winter and 86 day. That is the useful thing to know about it. This is a daytime family most people read as evening, because of what it is built from.
Capricorn's shelf is nearly out of print
Capricorn · 22 December – 19 January · earth, moss, damp wood
Sixty-nine bottles clear the floor. That is the fewest of the twelve by a distance, and half of them were released before 2008, which makes this the oldest set on the page by nine years. Read the section as a sketch rather than a survey.
What is on it is the oldest serious idea in modern perfumery: the chypre, built on oakmoss, patchouli and damp wood. It smells like forest floor after rain and like a wardrobe shut for a decade. Oakmoss is in 70% of these and vetiver in 61%, the two highest pairing figures in the whole guide.
Capricorn is earth, cardinal, ruled by Saturn, the planet of time and limits and consequences. The adult in the room: unhurried, playing a game whose scoreboard nobody else can see, with a dry sense of humour that people miss on first meeting. The sign is said to age backwards, serious at twenty and considerably better company at sixty. Its shelf scores 68 for winter, 67 for night, and almost nothing sweet.
Aquarius is the only shelf that refuses winter outright
Aquarius · 20 January – 18 February · ozone, salt, open water
Calone and its relatives do not smell of a thing. They smell of space, wind, and the second before rain, and nothing in nature produces them. This is perfumery's most artificial trick and its strangest: a bottle holding an idea rather than an ingredient.
Which is a very Aquarian place to end up. The sign is air, fixed, ruled by Saturn and latterly Uranus, and it belongs to the group and to nobody at the same time. Detached rather than cold, in most readings. Fond of humanity in general, hard to reach in particular, drawn to whatever the future is meant to look like, and reliably contrary the moment everyone agrees.
25 for winter against 84 for summer is the widest split on this page in either direction. 104 bottles, half of them men's, and a thin pairing list, because when the accord is emptiness there is not much to build it out of. Green Irish Tweed has been holding the shelf up since 1985.
Pisces gets the most expensive material in the room
Pisces · 19 February – 20 March · iris and violet
Orris butter costs more per kilo than almost anything a perfumer can specify. That is why 123 bottles is as big as this shelf ever gets, and why iris fragrances tend to be the ones a house is quietly proud of.
Iris is cool, powdery, faintly cold to the touch. More suggestion than statement, and it never sits still long enough to be described the same way twice. Violet does the same in a smaller register. Iris is in 72% of this group, second only to Taurus's vanilla.
Pisces is the last sign and water, mutable, ruled by Jupiter and latterly Neptune. Astrology says it carries something of the eleven before it, which is the poetic way of saying porous: absorbs the mood of a room without being asked, and imagines its way out of anything unpleasant. Most empathetic sign of the twelve or the most evasive, depending who you ask.
61 for winter, 57 for night. Three of the five most-voted are men's, which surprises people who file violets under girlhood.

Does your star sign really decide what suits you?
No, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Pairing a sign to a scent family is our choice, not a finding. Everything numeric on this page comes out of the catalogue instead, and you can check any of it on the fragrance page it came from.
How were the five picked?
By votes. Each sign owns accords no other sign here uses, and a fragrance has to carry one of them as its first or second accord to qualify. We kept ratings of 3.7 and up with at least a thousand votes behind them, took the most-voted first, and allowed one bottle per house so that a single brand could not fill a list.
My sign's list is nothing like me.
Read the one above or below it instead. The families are real and so are the votes. The line drawn between a shelf and a birthday is the part we made up, and you are allowed to ignore it.
What do the season and time-of-day numbers mean?
They run 0 to 100 and they are voted, not measured: they record when wearers say they reach for a bottle, which is not the same as when it performs best. The figure beside each sign is the average across that sign's whole group, not just the five on the list.
