Our take

Blue Oud opens with a crisp, almost jarring snap of black pepper and green apple, the fruitiness cutting through the woody haze like a knife through cold butter. That initial brightness softens quickly as saffron and a restrained jasmine weave in, but the oud here is no gloomy, medicinal beast. It’s a polite synthetic wood, polished and buffed until it glows, with guaiac and sandalwood lending a creamy warmth to the base. The whole affair feels like a freshly lacquered oud chest left open in a room full of dried fruits and clean musk, the powder-fresh air trapped inside escaping slowly.

This is a fragrance that tries to be both sharp and soft, ambitious but ultimately a little confused. The apple and bergamot promise a fruity freshness that never quite delivers on its sour, tangy edge, while the ambergris and musk smooth things into a safer, more mainstream warmth. It’s pleasant, inoffensive, but it lacks the tenacity and sillage that the “oud” name suggests. With longevity barely pushing past three hours and projection that stays close to the skin, it evaporates faster than a spring morning breeze.

Lattafa’s Blue Oud works best for someone new to woody scents, a gateway oud that won’t scare off the uninitiated. Skip it if you want a smoky, animalic oud that roars for hours. Wear it on a cool spring evening, after a shower, when you want a whisper of something dark and sweet without waking the neighbors. Is that really what an oud should be? It depends on your idea of adventure.
