Our take

Bois Rouge opens with a sharp, almost acidic bergamot that cuts through the air before the cedar and patchouli step in, leathery and dry. The jasmine and lily of the valley are not sweet flowers but bruised white petals pressed into dark wood, giving the whole thing a formal, slightly haunted elegance. By the dry down, the leather and vetiver take over, backed by a powdery amber that softens the edges without making it fuzzy. The overall effect is like walking into a mahogany-paneled study after a thunderstorm: the windows are open, the leather armchair is still damp, and someone left a single wilted carnation on the desk.

This is a serious fragrance, heavy on the earth and the animalic, with a synthetic smoothness that feels very Tom Ford polished rather than natural. The sillage sits politely moderate, and longevity is respectable but not a marathon, so do not expect to project across a room all day. That is fine. Who needs a shout when the whisper is this seductive.

It suits a man who wears wool and knows the difference between tartan and tweed, who wants to smell like he belongs in a corner booth at a members club, not a nightclub. Skip it if you crave freshness or sweetness. Wear it in the cold months, fall and winter, for an evening dinner or a late afternoon meeting when you want to be authoritative without being loud.
