Our take

Cabaret by Grès opens with a bouquet that feels almost too polite, a dewy trio of rose, peony, and lily-of-the-valley that could belong to any well-mannered floral. But Michel Almairac has planted a splinter of incense and iris in the heart, and that’s where the show begins. The violet whispers something darker, and the base steps forward with patchouli, sandalwood, and a faintly narcotic oleander that gives the whole composition a waxy, balsamic warmth. It dries down to a powdery amber musk that clings close to skin, like a silk scarf left crumpled on a dressing table after the last guest has gone.

This is a chypre floral that never fully strips off its gloves. It feels deliberate, slightly retro, with a synthetic sheen that keeps it from tipping into full vintage opulence. The sillage is a modest hush and the longevity a polite three to four hours, which is its quiet downfall. You will need to reapply, or else the stage goes dark too soon. It suits a woman who wants to smell expensive without shouting about it, someone who prefers the grey hour between afternoon tea and evening cocktails. Skip it if you crave projection or a gourmand whisper. Wear it to a matinee, a gallery opening, or a spring funeral where you intend to be the best-dressed mourner. Cabaret is a footlight in a velvet booth. It illuminates, but it does not flood the room.
