Cabochard opens hard, aldehydes and tarragon crackling against sage and asafoetida in a way few modern fragrances would dare attempt. It lingers with real persistence from that first crackle, projecting dense and close, wrapping the wearer in a tight envelope rather than a wide, roaming one. Lemon and fruity notes soften it only slightly; this is a bitter, medicinal beginning, built for a different era's taste in real boldness and daring.
Geranium, orris root, rose and jasmine crowd into the heart, dense and slightly old-fashioned, ylang-ylang adding a creamy sweetness that softens the whole bouquet into something rounder and warmer. Nothing about this heart feels shy or transparent; it is built with real density, layer upon layer of aging florals.
The base is where Cabochard truly shows its character. Leather and oakmoss form a dark, mossy foundation, tobacco and vetiver adding smoke and earth, patchouli and amber thickening everything further, and coconut, oddly, gives the whole structure a faint, warm sweetness underneath the animalic musk, the leather refusing to fade politely into something safer.
Fall suits Cabochard best, when its darkness and weight feel most appropriate against cooler air. It stays a serious, uncompromising fragrance throughout, built for full conviction in vintage leather chypres, not a cautious first taste of the genre.
