Our take

Coriolan is Guerlain’s forgotten Roman general of a fragrance: stately, stoic, and dressed in weathered leather. It opens with a brisk salute of lemon and sage, sharpened by petitgrain’s green bitterness and a whisper of neroli’s florality. That citrus fanfare collapses quickly into the heart’s peculiar fennel and coriander duet, soft and almost savory, like crushed seeds in a warm mortar. As it dries, oakmoss and vetiver take command, gritty and damp, while a leather note buckles everything into place with a faint, smoky restraint. This is not a loud scent. Its sillage hovers close, and longevity fades after four hours on average, which feels like a betrayal given the depth happening underneath.

The impression is of an antique writing desk, its drawers lined with dried herbs and old leather maps. The composition is natural but richly blended, a chypre from an era when men’s fragrance could be complex without shouting. It suits someone who prefers maturity over trend, who wants a scent that stays near the skin and rewards close attention. Skip it if you require projection or a sweet, playful profile. Wear it to a quiet autumn afternoon, a spring lunch with hardcover books in sight, or any daytime setting where confidence needs no announcement. One rhetorical question: who else but Jean-Paul Guerlain would dare put fennel front and center and make it work so well?
